Hatha Yoga is a traditional holistic style of physical yoga. With 'Ha' means sun and 'Tha' means moon, hatha yoga is commonly translated as “the union of the pairs of opposites”. Hatha Yoga believes to balance the flow of Pranas (subtle energies) in the body. It divides body as a gross form of energy and mind as subtle form, with the practices of physical methods like postures (asanas), purification procedures (shatkriyas), poses (mudras), yogic breathing (pranayamas) and locks (bandhas) the weakness and instability of mind can be removed.
Hatha represents opposing energies: hot and cold (fire and water, following similar concept as yin-yang), male and female, positive and negative. Hatha yoga attempts to balance mind and body via physical postures or "asanas", purification practices, controlled breathing, and the calming of the mind through relaxation and meditation.
Asanas teach poise, balance and strength and are practised to improve the body's physical health and clear the mind in preparation for meditation in the pursuit of enlightenment.
In the Indian tradition hatha yoga is one of the four main traditions of tantra yoga. Asanas are practiced in hatha yoga for two main objectives, the first is to have practice meditation so the body is required firm and stable, while the second purpose to bring health and energy to body and mind. Same way Pranayama balances the flow of vital energy or prana in the body thus eliminating the toxins and negativity out.
