Poor breathing habits can be spotted easily around and even in many yoga classes. While teaching workshops and classes in different parts of world I came across with a myth and fear linked to pranayama practices. In west the main focus of yoga is limited merely to asanas.
In Sanskrit Prana refers to vital energy or force and yama means control or ayama means expansion of prana. Man is gifted with five different pranas, those help in functioning of several organ systems in body. Any disturbance in these vital forces will cause disease and disturbances in body. Pranayama are the breathing techniques developed by ancient yogis to regulate the flow of vital forces in body and nadis (nerves).
Pranayama ensures the proper functioning of these five pranas and their movements in body:
Prana: responsible for inward reception from inspiration, food or liquid intake, sense perceptions. It is primary life supporting energy within body for motions.
Apana: Moves downward and outward expels carbon dioxide, stools, urine, semen, menstrual fluids and fetus. On deeper level it strengthens immune system and expels the negative sensory and emotional experiences.
Samana: It regulates flow of energy from the body back to navel. It facilitates digestion of food and absorption of oxygen in lungs.
Vyana: It distributes the energy from navel to other parts of body, so it facilitates circulation of blood in body. It also regulates the flow of oxygen, nutrients and water throughout the body.
Udana: It governs energy movements up from navel to the head. It is responsible for release of positive energy, growth, enthusiasm and ability to stand.
Pranayama links the external limbs of yoga with internal limbs. It is the horizon where external and internal practices meet and leads to harmony in life. Modern researches have proved that pranayama techniques are beneficial in treating stress related disorders, purifying the nerves, improving autonomic functions, and reducing oxidative stress. It develops steady mind, strong will power, enhanced perception and sound judgment ability.
Pranayama practices are recommended under guidance of a qualified teacher.
